Poker Betting Strategy for the Beginner

If you’re a beginning poker player then be sure to read our poker betting tips before you play for real money.

If you read only one of our poker betting tips read this one: don’t try to be cunning or deceptive when you first begin to play. Simply win as much as you can when you have the best hand, and lose as little as you can when you have the worst hand.

These tips make for great Texas HoldEm betting strategy, too.

Poker Betting Strategy: Lose as Little as Possible

To lose as little as possible you must not bet when you have a bad hand. This may sound like common sense, but the tendency of many players is to want to play.

The problem with wanting to play is that you bet on hands that will lose more often than they win. This means you won’t recoup the money on your wins that you lose on your losses.

Only bet on or call on the hands that have a high probability of winning. This can mean throwing away a high percentage of your hands.

Even when playing these high-probability hands always be willing to throw them away if the cards of your opponent suggest that they may have your hand beat. This is true for your Texas HoldEm betting strategy too.

Poker Betting Strategy: Winning as Much As You Can

When starting out there’s no reason to get tricky. Many opponents will want to play a high percentage of their hands and they’re looking for a reason to bet. If you feel you have the strongest hand then bet it.

More advanced techniques like blind stealing, bluffing, and semi-bluffing all have their place, but when you’re first starting out stay focused on the basics.

The best way to get better at poker is to play lots of hands and pay attention. As a beginning player you’ll learn more from watching how people bet and respond to others than you’ll get from reading handbooks and guides.
